Thanked: 23My straights
New to the forum and want to share. I've been shaving with a straight razor ever since I learned to shave. My dad taught me how to hone and strop, but he never told me about some of the other things that I have seen here. For instance how to use a pumice stone... which I still don't understand. I've never pasted my strop either. I feel like I always get a close shave but from the information I am reading here, which is great by the way, i may be missing out on a much closer shave.
Here's some photos:
This razor was given to me by my dad
and this one without a handle... working on finding one.

Thanked: 23Thanks, the swaty is all I have used thus far; however, as my beard gets thicker with age I see a few honing stones in my future... along with a few more bokers. The boker is by far the better shave of the three.

You should listen to your father!
It's true, really, you've got it better than most of us here. You don't need to pumice your strop - it looks good (I say pig skin). The pumice is for fixing people's errors, sometimes it's not enough and you need contact cement too.
No need to paste the strop either. If you can use the swaty well, I don't think a paste would give you much benefit. Of course if you want to play you can get some Chromium oxide from ChrisL and paste the back side of the strop that you're not using currently.
Actually that side's already treated with something - I just read the label on the strop. Leave it as it is.Last edited by gugi; 03-31-2009 at 06:51 AM.

Welcome to SRP. Very cool to have your father's razors. Worth more then any you can buy. Smooth shaving to you.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
