I'm new here and I hope I can get some help here.
I'm looking for a razor for my dad this Christmas as a present and I've been wondering what's the best razor for men that you have ever used?

What are the best blades for sensitive skin but thick hair? He can grow a pretty thick beard but his skin is pretty sensitive. So I need something that can tackle both. Any advice on blades, heads, or soaps would be much appreciated.

The double edged razor that I used for years before straights is a Muhle R-89 Twist.
It's a little bigger and beefier than a normal sized razor and gives a very comfortable shave.
Fit and finish is very high quality.

I expect there is a compression ring to keep the bottom part in place. Can it be taken apart to clean?

The bottom of the handle turns and unscrews the guard and blade at the top.

Back when I shaved with a DE I tried to find a Gillette DE manufactured on my birth year but of course my luck would have it they started the date code in 1950 and I was born in 1949.

How about helping us out and letting us know what the max of your budget is so we have a better Idea of what to suggest. The other thing is that I doubt there is a universal best for all men DE razor as everyone is different. There are plenty of excellent DEs though.

When you ask for assistance like this in an enthusiasts forum, you are bound to get many different opinions that may cloud the issue. The bottom line is, your father is going to have to try different razors over time, and any ONE razor that a member here feels is the best may not work for your father. So the best you can do is start with something "mild" and go from there. And given that your time to Christmas is now very limited, your best bet will probably be a razor from Amazon to ensure it gets to you on time.

My favorite "mild" razor is the Merkur 23c. It's very inexpensive given the high quality (under $30), widely available (including Amazon). By mild, I mean it has a very small blade reveal. The opening of the razor where the blade is exposed on the Merkur 23c, 38c and similar Merkur razors is very small, so even if someone has very poor shaving skills and/or very sensitive skin, it is more difficult for them to razor burn or cut themselves. This mild blade reveal also translates to a razor that is gentle on sensitive skin.

And the low cost means that if your father doesn't quite like it for his shaving style or skin type, the cash outlay was very minimal. Yet it's a very nice razor given the bargain price.

Sensitive blades run the gamut. Again, you are going to get quite a few different opinions. I happen to think Lord Platinum and Voskhod are very smooth for MY skin type. Your father may not.

Best you can do is buy a SAMPLER PACK of many different blades and let your father decide. Here is a great sampler pack from Amazon of 9 different packs of blades so your father can try 9 different ones and see if any work. This smapler pack is under $6.00 and arrives before Christmas. We need to know your budget and also what your dad has been using and what he might prefer.

There are a zillion DEs on the market starting at probably ten bucks going up to around eight hundred dollars or more. There are new and there are vintage.
