    Ouch, that is sad. I know it must hurt to have a precious razor develop problems like that...good luck, and let us know how it goes.

    Because I, for one, prefer patina to polish and if it works like that, I'd be quite pleased...

    That patina quote got me to thinking about the old carbon steel potato peelers. The blades get black with patina.
    Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    Excellent!! Thanks very much for that. Looks like there's a store not too far from me and might just go down and get a tube if the aluminium foil method doesn't work...

    It's oxidation, but not rust. Carbon steel does this unless it is either 1)polished regularly or 2) protected using oil or some similar coating. I have a number of blades that are completely grey except at the very edge. The good news is this type of oxidation actually protects the metal.

    Well, thanks to Russ, I managed to get hold of the Maas polish. Just applied it and the spots went in no time. Few!! For a moment, I thought my Puma had it.
