    Default Baccash, Saigh & Co.

This week I received my first straight razor, a Baccash, Saigh & Co. 5/8th half hollow ground. I paid 15€ (21$) for it. The edge seems to be in good condition though not shave ready; the scales have one nick from the blade hitting it but otherwise they are also in relatively good condition.

I'm interested about its history; the previous owner didn't know anything about it and Google turned up nothing, so I was hoping if any of the experts here might find out the period when these razors were manufactured.

    The box has this inscription:
    BACCASH, SAIGH & Co
    CHICAGO, ILL
    MADE IN GERMANY
    No 1050
    Price 3,50$

This may or may not be true, but I'm pretty sure that when a blade says "made in _____," it's usually pretty tough to figure out who actually made her. You may have more luck with a date, though. Most (maybe all, but I couldn't say) vintage blades that are stamped "Made in Germany" turn out to be solid shavers.

Here's a picture of it I made with my scanner, including the box and the instructions I found inside it.
I bought this razor to motivate me into starting a new hobby, and of course to get a better shave. So now I just need to buy a strop and a few hones. And some soap and a brush and ... Where did all the money go?

I've been reading the wiki and made myself a light diffuser like instructed so the pictures below are a bit better.

    Needs some buffing I think.

The (empty) backside had some uneven patina and a few pits so I decided to hand sand it carefully, not touching the bevel or the spine. As is obvious from the picture it's still work in progress. Sore wrists.

It's not very pretty yet but it's getting there.
