    Definetly something japanese!

The blade looks a bit short to me! How much is the gap between the blade and the scales, when it's closed?

Don't forget that Joseph Elliot, among other Sheffield manufacturers of the second third of the XIX c., started making a so called "Chinese Razor" with ideograms on the tang (sometimes on the blade).

Ok. So, when the razor is closed, there is a gap between the blade and the wedge (the so called "spacer" of the scales, at the end of the razor). Normally this gap is about 1/2-1 inch (about 1-2,5 cm). If the end of the blade is chipped, etc, sometimes people cut the end of the blade (shorten the blade). In this case the gap between the end of the blade, and the wedge is more than 1 inch (2,5 cm). This is a good thing to look at, when You get a new razor.

It appears that the blade has indeed been shortened for some reason. I'm guessing at one time it had a barbers notch. It probably is an English razor with Japanese nomenclature. Since the toe has been shortened you might want to have the bottom front corner of the blade rounded a bit to prevent nicks. It may not need it but it looks a bit sharp at that point.
My daughter has a friend who can probably translate that just let me know.

You forgot to mention it's 85 in your gallery (you damn collector ;-p). Funny story behind that blade; it actually used to be mine and found it's way to Clavichord (via me again) from another member. Gotta love this forum and the friends you make here.

By the way, OP, that is a very cool looking blade! I'm jealous.
