Gift Tragedy
A friend of mine travelled to Spain, then England, then New York. I told him before he left to keep an eye out for a straight razor for me. He didn't know if I used them or collected them, so got he spent 20 pounds in London on the one he thought was scaled in ivory and over 100 years old. At the very least the case and the scales will be saved. Anyone have thoughts or ideas about a regrind? It's so beautiful, and in such condition... the cracks bring tears to my eyes...
cheers,
Justin

I would say that the beautiful elements would make it worth a stab at regrinding. Seriously, it's a beautiful blade...the scales are very interesting, and that spine work is gorgeous.

If what I see is correct, your blade about 13/16 or 7/8. Right?
I believe you can make out of it 6/8 or on worst case 5/8 for sure, and we will keep our mouth shut

That is a nice traveling scale case set and it is just really too sad that the blade was so badly mauled.
From the photo I can see that there is even a crack in the blade that appears to run up halfway to the spine. Even repeated trips to the orthodontist won't save that blade.
I wouldn't waste even one minute on any regrind attempts. Instead, spend your time on finding another good blade that can be pinned into those very fine scales.

ignatz:
I know the line you speak of, and I don't think it is a crack. It only shows on one side, but is a thin dark line on the other side. The dark line corresponds with a crack, but the two diverge less than half-way up the line's length, the crack being much more straight than the line. Perhaps it is oxidation? The longest crack is at the heel and runs (guessing here, on a head full of great wine) 4 mm.
No doubt about saving the scales however... maybe if someone has a Wacker in lame scales laying about somewhere...
Also, why can't I find any threads with this solingen brand?
