    Default Large Stainless Steel Razor

Can anyone recommend a large(r) stainless steel razor? I prefer new razors or used ones in excellent condition - I am not interested in doing extensive honing / restoration at this time.

The only new razor I have seen is a 6/8 SS by Dovo called Renaissance. Any others out there? Any particular websites / sellers I should check out?

    Thanks.

John Crowley at the Shaving Shop here has many large razors.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I can recommend the new grind NOS Friodurs. Mine's a 7/8 & very large. Apparently the 8/8 are monsters! I'd like one myself.
John sells them, or they're often on the bay. They generally need a rescale if sourced there, but that can be a nice excuse for a bit of customisation!

I can recommend the 13/16ths Weltmeister 865 Rustfrei on John's site. Stainless but not cryo treated. Seems smoother than any other stainless razor I've used plus it was a breeze to hone, which is often not the case with stainless.

I have the 8/8 and I LOVE IT!! Glen (gssixgun) put on some sweet new scales. Shaves very well. I have heard some feel they are difficult to hone, so keep that in mind for when the time comes.

They're not bad, they just vary a little. What works for one might not work for another. I found mine kept a more durable, smoother edge with 3 layers of tape.

If John joins in he'll condemn it, but i love the shave it gives. He's pretty anti altering the geometry & has very firm views!

Many of the Custom razors can be had in large sizes. Livi for one.

All of the "stainless" razors coming out of Solingen are cryo hardened. 440C is a great high carbon stain resistant steel but it is radically improved by the cryogenic hardening process. It would not be suitable for straight razors if not cryo hardened.

    I learned something, thanks John.

None the less, the Weltmeister Rustfrei is the smoothest stainless razor I've used, including Friodurs, Hess, and a Heljestrand. Plus it was much more easily honed.
