Oh, I wasn’t criticizing your opinion, and in fact agree with you, except that Gold Dollars aren’t entirely useless.

I lost a bag traveling in 2014 and with it a hardware store Solingen, a worn Le Grelot, and a couple of GDs. I still miss the Solingen and Grelot a bit though I have replaced both. The GDs? Nah!

They were never intended to be marketed in the west, and for years there was no English language website for them. There appears to be some interest in making a Chinese razor for the west, but at this point nothing has materialized. The ZY and its ilk are a total failure. You can buy a honed GD for $35-40, but you can get nice vintages for the same price.

The only reason to buy a dozen or more GDs is because you want to, to give away, test stones, keep a few for travel, etc.

If you want elegant razors to shave with, these are not them, lol.

I’ve been tempted to do an edge longevity test with one to try and settle the steel quality question, but the idea of shaving with one for that many shaves leaves me cold. But I may do it.

I only actually have one GD.

I got it to practice honing and re scaling etc.

As it happens, I fixed the heel honed it up and I never did re-scale it.

I have that GD in my rotation and I'm always pleased when it comes round.

Its not pretty, its clunky but it holds an edge and its a great shaver.

I'm not suggesting by any means that you should all rush out and get one, I wont get any more but I got it to play with and practice with.

I can hone well enough to suit my face and as time goes by I will get better but I was lucky, my GD is as good for me as any of the others, I doubt very much if there all decent, but for less than $5 I'm not complaining and as said, if you leave it somewhere you wont want to drive back an hour and hope it's still there.

I got what you are saying and I don't disagree. It's more a state of mind probably. I keep razors I could toss also. Mine are usually just vintage one that I have no sentimental attachment to. My answer to that is buying lots on fleabay. There are always those you don't give a rats ass about in them along with the one or two you were after. I DO cede to your points about having identical ones for testing. But, all roads lead to Rome right?

Well, I am sick of coming to the front page and seeing GD threads dominating, fed continuously by members here who should know better.

It would be nice to have ying and yang discuss their junk in a lonesome thread OR preferably PMs.

Stuff is not for shaving and that is a fact. You cannot learn anything from them except to confirm that they are indeed junk.
I don't think a disussion is warrented, esp by other members here. It just never ends.

A lot of your pics look like the spine is warped. If so, the edge is warped & that's from the heat treatment, rarely from the grinding process..
All the metal you remove just gives you ugly bevels & a razor that remains warped.
I get that you're learning & practicing but the underlying problem remains on that type of razor.
Just saying, if you're learning razors why start with the hard basket.
