I have taken a new Gold Monkey and a new Gold Dollar 208 to shave ready with a Keen Kutter Kombination barber hone. It has a courser "sharpening" side, as well as a finishing/polishing side. It takes about 200 careful passes on the sharpening side and 10-20 on the finishing side. Then Cro paddle, linen/leather strop. You will have to shave with it and go back to the hone and paddle until you are satisfied with the shave. Mine shave as well as the vintage honed on a full set of hones. I really can't tell any difference.
Not sure if this is possible with a single grit barber hone. If so, it would take much more work. Probably to the point of being ridiculous.
