My understanding is that these new, inexpensive Damascus blades are Pakistani in orgin and unsuitable for shaving. A member purchased one and tried to hone it to a shaving edge, but was unable to do so. I cannot say that this will be the case for all the inexpensive Damascus razors that pop up, but I personally would not risk it. If it looks to good to be true, it probably is.

On the first razor, I tried googling "damascus steel and jacobs usa" and got nothing. Could just be the stamp of the guy bringing them in to add to the sell factor.

Good pattern welded steel is very labor intensive and quite a bit of knowledge goes into knowing which steels will work well together to be suited for a knife or razor. Then there is the forging aspect of welding the steels properly so it becomes homogenous without inclusions. After that there is the process of heat treating. You could also ruin good blade steel with poor heat treating.

Holli is prob right in that they are probably from pakistan. Chances are even if the steel is good, the heat treat is questionable. I would be suprised if they did hold a decent edge.

There are a lot of online resources for the making of damascus. Youtube has got loads of videos.

Well, for one thing they are not real damascus steel. The art of making this steel was lost a long time ago.

Yes, the correct term would be "pattern welded or forge folded steel." Many ABS Mastersmiths still call it Damascus for general reference.

To my knowledge there are only two razors out there that are truly folded steel. One is the TI Damascus and the other as I recall was a limited production of a razor at SRD.

Here I'll be showing my ignorance, but what about the custom blades made from the known razorsmiths? Are those something else? (I'd thought they were folded steel as well)

Maestro Levi calls his blades Damascus steel. I guess the more correct might be Damascus processed steel or Damascus like steel. If you want to get technical about it. But I think everyone on this forum knows what is meant in using the term.

Some good links to articles about Damascene steel (the real one, not the pattern welded look-alike) are on this page: Damascene Technique in Metal Working
