Default why is this blade magnetic, and how old is it?

    Hello all,

I have this razor made by Challenge Cutlery, Bridgeport Connecticut. It is also stamped "93".

Very lightly embossed on the blade in gothic lettering are the words "Magnetized Steel". And sure enough it is slightly magnetic.

Why did they do this? Was it just some marketing ploy, or did they really believe it improved some quality of the blade? Or maybe to "stick" to metallic honing plates?? Should I try and magnetize my Dovo blades?!?

Also, anyone have a ballpark idea how old this razor is? Thanks!

People were dumb in the olden times. My guess it was some new age mumbo jumbo about magnets making the shave more refreshing. Wait, that's the kind of crap people would believe now... I've gotta get to the patent office!

Did you buy this razor already restored? Because some restorers use powerful earth magnets to hold the blade in place while working on its surface. This can affect the blade and leave it slightly magnetized. I have razors stamped "Magnetic" that have no attraction to metal at all.

    Regards - Walt

I couldn't tell you how old it is and I was thinking the same thing as Walt about it possibly being around a magnet. The fact that it is etched 'magnetic' is interesting. Not the first I've seen but I've never owned one.

I guess it was a marketing gimmick. Whether they really magnetized them and if they did what it was supposed to accomplish is unknown to me. So I am no help at all but I'm glad that you brought it up because if someone does know maybe we'll both find out.

BTW, Radio Shack sells a little gizmo that de-magnetizes metals if you want to get rid of the magnetism.

Doc is a quack! Don't buy his magnetic razors! Only my razors align your shokra and increase the size of things you want increased while decreasing the size of things you want decreased, all while you sleep. Also it cures cancer. Doc's magnetism just loads your body with toxins and parasites that cause mental illnesses. Also, his razors are possessed by the devil.

You can't completely demagnitize metal, without basically melting it.

I don't know about completely but I've seen a tattoo machine that would pick up a # 12 sharps (needle) touched to it demagnetized with one of those small cheap things. It wouldn't pick it up afterwards. Here is a page full of them from cheap to more expensive.
