Hmmm ... Seems like I thought I was asking a noob question, that turned out to not be so noob after all. Thanks to all for weighing in. My question really comes from my desire to get a Friodur stainless ("no-stain"), and found a couple of Friodurs on ebay that were not specifically marked "no-stain", so didn't want to put out much money for something that wasn't what I wanted. Sooo ... now, maybe a follow-up question ... how else would you go about identifying a stainless blade ... especially without seeing it in person? I assume the answer here might be that there is not good way to do that ... but thought I'd see if the exceptionally creative minds on here might have an idea. I have not personally seen a stainless straight in person, but I assume I would be able to tell from looking at it in person, but not sure I could do so via a photo. Anything I could ask the seller, perhaps? Thanks again to everyone.

Not sure if you can tell stainless from non-stainless just by looking at it (assuming the blades are well cared for and in good shape). However, if you want a stainless Friodur, then simply restrict your purchase to a Friodur that is stamped "no stain" or "inox."
If a blade is stainless, it's stamped or marked in some way to indicate that it's stainless. Considering the marketing benefits, a company would be foolish not to advertise that their blade was stainless. The only scenario I could see where a stainless blade would not be indicated as stainless would be a vintage blade that was reconditioned to the point of erasing the "no-stain" indication.Last edited by radaddict; 12-02-2009 at 03:04 PM.
