Monopol is one of the brands of the Friedr. Baurmann & Sohne.. I bought the last of the straight razors they had in 2004 and sold them on eBay and at my original web site. Kurt - the guy who owns Baurmann now - is an interesting character. He spent five years in Algeria including the four years of the Algerian War. He participated in the Foreign Legion mutiny and was banished to the desert with the other members of the Legion who participated. He doesn't speak a word of English and I do not speak any German so I communicated with him through online translator programs.

I have a metropol or two - they are pretty good shavers. I think you will enjoy that set!

Yes they do. I know nothing about them, although they both came from Australian sources (some old men my father in law knew when he worked in an old age home back in the '60s).

Wow, what a set to get as a gift! Do you know how much the friend paid for them? I'd be repaying the favour with a good bottle of his favourite spirit.

Im not sure what was paid for them, but I guess a fair amount. They were purchased at an antique fair.

I searched on ebay and found a Metropol 'trademark' not a special, by the maker that was suggested earlier in this thread.

The reverse says 'Solingen' and 'Germany,' whereas mine only says 'Germany.'
Have a look, but am I correct to assume these are Solingen blades?

If the firm was a Solingen firm at one time it is HIGHLY likely they always were/are, whether it says it or not. I would imagine a lot of imported blades only said Germany (even if they were made in Solingen). My Hoffritz is an example of this- says Hoffritz and M.I. Germany, but the case says Solingen and apparently they were produced by Dovo (in Solingen) under contract.
