Thanked: 0Help Dating a Joseph Elliot
I picked up a Joseph Elliot at an Antique store today. It appears to be a full wedge 7/8 or 8/8. The Tang had a cross with a "C" and says "Joesph Elliot /S Best Silver Steel."
I am not sure if the scales are original but one side says Joseph Elliot Sheffield and the other says Congress Razor. As far as condition, it look pretty good. The blade has a nice patina. Maybe just a few spots of corrosion. No pits. IT shows very very little hone wear.
Can anyone help me date this razor and also let me know if I got a good deal? It was $24.00.

Sounds like one heck of a deal. Not sure about age, pics would help with that. I'd like to see pics anyway... I love Elliots.

Pics, yes! Joseph Elliott & Son Sheffield was in business from 1795 until the present, according to Goins'. The C Cross C trademark dates from 1895 until 1944. Hope this helps, and we would love to see pics of this behemoth Elliot!

Thanked: 0I am trying to get some pics up. Also, picked up a J.A Hencels Zwillingswek #53 at the same time. I don't think the scales were original which is good because I dropped it when I got home and the scales shattered.
2 questions, where can I get it re-scaled and how much does it cost? What does the 53 mean?
Sorry, that was 3 questions.

Nice pressed horn scales, original or not-guess they probably are. I don't see cracks or insect damage. The pressed horn adds to collectability and value. The blade seems about 1/4 hollow ground from the pics, could be wrong. Still can't date it, but it looks to be pre-1900 to me. Did you measure the blade width? Looks like more of a 6/8 than one inch, unless the camera angle fooled me. Get it honed, and have a great shave! My Joseph Elliots have been excellent and silky smooth shavers, yours should prove no exception.

Thanked: 0Just measured it. It is 7/8 on the nose. Does anyone know how much the guys at SRD charge for restoration and scale work? The scales seems to be a little loose when I first open the razor.
