Thread: At The Thrift store

I found 2 Straight razors at the thrift store today. They wanted $65 each but we negotiated a much more reasonable price. They both look pretty beat up. Lots of scratches and dents on the blades and the scales are rusty near the pins.

One is a Wade and Butcher with "full concave" engraved on the blade and the other says D. Peres on one side and Magnetic Cutlery Co, Philadelphia on the other side.

Would it be worth having them restored?

I figure if nothing else they will be good to practice honing with.

Those razors look fine . All you need to do is clean them up , polish them with some Flitz or Maas metal polish , and get them honed (or hone'em yourself) . I have a W&B full concave , and it's one of my sharpest razors .

You ask if they're worth restoring...I'd say YES as I've seen razors that are way way way worse off coming out of restore looking like a million bucks!

I'm working on several personal restore right now and NONE are in as good a shape as those two.

I am totally newbie to all this. The Wade and Butcher seems to have a positive following. I am going to send it to get it cleaned up. The D peres I will use for practice.

Welcome to SRP Rmaldon. Great find! There is going to be a meet somewhere in NYC in the near future. You should see if you are available to join them. They can review your razors first hand. I have both brands of razors and they shave fine. If you hit them with some metal polish as noted above you may be able to get them honed at the meet. It's funny that in NYC, the city where you can do/find anything at anytime there are so few places to find/buy straight razors or straight razor accessories (Tomorrow I hope to pick up a Norton 4k/8k from a hobby/woodworking shop). We have The Art of shaving, The New York shaving Company and that is about it.

I went to pick up some dog food across the street from a thrift store and poked my head in and asked if they ever got Straight razors. The young woman said they rarely got them in and then looked around and came up with 3 straight razors. The two listed above and a third one marked ELENA.

I must say that those are NICE scores! I restored a D. Peres that was far worse, and it's one of my faves. Still working on my W&B restore. My Peres before and afters attached. Had to modify the shape to remove a crack near the heel.
