Thread: Newer dovo with significant hone wear

I guess you guys know about something which I don't. I've never been to any other shaving forums or read anything about Dovo razors from other sources. Maybe I should have said I've heard new Dovo(and other brands) razors require some finishing because they have not been perfectly ground. To be fair though I've read that about a lot of new razors, not just Dovo. I've never read any negative reviews of Dovo, and I apologize for the confusion if I made it sound that way. I just thought it was unusual for a newer razor to hav
more wear than a vintage blade and thought it may have been due to the wayit came from the factory. Of course most things which aren't purely machine made will be slightly different. I really like the razor even with the wear and would definitely buy another if I found a nice deal. Thanks for all the responses, I'll post pics in a few hours.

Excellent. Would you please provide the URLs to the threads in this forum which contain the information that promted your remark about Dovo grinding their razors poorly?

Heard or read? If read here, see above. If heard, your consultant seems a bit on the uninformed side.

I'm sure you've read the FAQ, but if for some reason you have not, look for "shave ready".

Do some simple maths. How much hone wear would you need to produce an edge that is 2mm wide?

Thanks for that, I know they are good razors and I like them for the reasons you said. I think guys are taking my comment of them not being properly ground as me saying dovos in general aren't ground right, but what I'm saying is that the ones with the issues like warping or whatever may have been ground improperly(or any other reason that causes a defect). I don't see where I mentioned a massive defect from the factory, but I think it was honed bad or way too much after it left the factory. Possibly to correct a defect or chip.

I'm curious as to what you are saying here. You say you've heard new dovo's need work to finish and are not perfectly ground, but you also say you've never read any negative reviews of Dovo's, nor have you visited any other shaving sites.

The question is, where did you read/hear about dovos and what did you read/hear?

It seems pretty clear that you took whatever you read/heard as true. Unfortunately, you made the easy mistake of believing a less than credible source. I know as a new guy, it's not always easy to tell who is and who is not credible. I made the same mistakes myself when I was new - if you search you'll find old posts by me saying things like "new razors are poorly made" and "you can't shave off an 8k." I wish I could find and delete all those posts, but at least now I know better.

I've got a couple Dovo's and all are fine razors, one of them was bought new about four months ago & it's fit and finish are quite nice. You should reveal those sources so that things can be set straight.

I'd recommend a new Dovo to anyone and have.

I believe he is just using the wrong terminology. He keeps saying 'grind' or 'ground' when he means 'honed'. We all know that most don't consider a factory edge truly shave ready.

Could be, Harley, but some have said that the actual grinds are uneven from the factory as well. I've never seen uneven grinds on a new Dovo, but I've only seen about 30 of them.

BeBerlin, if I get a chance I'll go through all the posts I can find on Dovos that need some work and provide links. To clarify, I've been using the words heard and read interchangibly. I've read everything here and I don't think I've ever discussed razors with someone in person. I don't consider someone saying a new Dovo needed to be worked because the edge or grind was off to be a negative comment, it just tells me they don't come shave ready from the factory, and can take some work to become shave ready. I have read the FAQ and know to look for shave ready. When I type "grind" I don't mean "hone", rather the initial grinding of the razor, giving it the shape(and I don't mean setting the bevel). Also, I don't really get why you said to do some math to figure out how much hone wear would be present to have a 2mm edge. I'm quite good at math, but what would it matter if I calculated this? This thread was to see if anyone had some opinions on why there is a lot of wear, not how much there is. I don't know what a normal edge would measure, and to calculate it I would need to take exact measurements of an unhoned razor to get all the widths and thicknesses. Anyways, I'm not one for debates on the Internet and I'm sure with each response I'm making things
worse for myself so let me just apologize for anything I've typed which upset
