Newer dovo with significant hone wear
A friend of mine gave me a Dovo special 6/8 that he got as part of a set of barber supplies for his wife. It looks fairly new but it has quite a bit if hone wear. Just wondering if this was common after honing newer Dovos that may have been poorly ground to have quite a bit of the spine worn down or if someone(maybe the barber) just honed it often or maybe used a knife whetstone or something. The wear is even, and the edge is pretty wide also(from the edge to the bevel is 2mm, if that makes sense). It is somewhat sharp but not enough to shave with. Any thoughts? I can post pics later.

From what you're saying its either been honed ALOT or, more likely, the person who honed it used far too much pressure and a low grit stone and has worn down the spine and bevel.
Are there scratches on the worn areas? If the razor has been honed up to a high finishing grit you wont really see scratches on these areas, but if someones only gone up to 1000 or something you'll see scratch marks. The spine wear off a 16k stone is almost mirror finish to the eye.
If you want to get it shave ready I would recommend sending it out to a honemeister (see the classifieds) to be worked on.
Posting some pics would be useful so we can see whats up..!

Thanked: 1936What Stubear said, except that I hone to 12K and the hone marks look like chrome...no scratches to be seen at all. As all will say though...pics say it all...

Thanks, that pretty much what I assumed. It's still a nice razor even with the hone wear. Ill send it out anyway. I can't complain, it was free after all.
Also, please explain how what I said was a contradiction of terms. I'm not trying to argue, I know very little about razors. From what I've heard new Dovos can be warped or uneven which I always assumed was because they weren't properly ground. Ive never really researched it though

Thanked: 1903The problem lies in the "what I've heard" bit. There is apparently only one place where you can hear such nonsense, and that is the abovementioned other forum. Mind you, the original poster never came up with the name of the vendor, nor did he post pictures of the alleged damage. As far as I am concerned, the whole thing might never have happened if it were not for the fact that I got silently banned from that forum shortly afterwards.

Thanked: 4942Virtually every new razor manufactured by anyone has some degree of grind marks or what could be perceived by a new person expecting to see no wear on a spine as some hone wear. Dovo's grind marks on new razors tend to be pretty consistent and if you watch their videos, you will see the the razor does go from the wheel to the stone. Some of the worst that I have seen recently actually come from TI where the flattening is in different places across the spine and different on both sides of the razor, reflected in the bevels. Most models still can be pretty decent shavers.
In my opinion, the comments "you heard" must have either an agenda or vendetta attached to them. I would not be surprised if Dovo wasn't looking into some litigation related to this either (hide those hard drives.......lol). I have honed and hone thousands of Dovos and not only are they flat on the stone, but the fit and finish of their razors is better than most. We have seen some people hone a significant amount of spine off a razor and then claim the the razor is warped. For many people, it is never their fault on anything. It is always the razor or stone or whatever.
Enjoy your new razor and have fun,

I guess you guys know about something which I don't. I've never been to any other shaving forums or read anything about Dovo razors from other sources. Maybe I should have said I've heard new Dovo(and other brands) razors require some finishing because they have not been perfectly ground. To be fair though I've read that about a lot of new razors, not just Dovo. I've never read any negative reviews of Dovo, and I apologize for the confusion if I made it sound that way. I just thought it was unusual for a newer razor to hav
more wear than a vintage blade and thought it may have been due to the wayit came from the factory. Of course most things which aren't purely machine made will be slightly different. I really like the razor even with the wear and would definitely buy another if I found a nice deal. Thanks for all the responses, I'll post pics in a few hours.
