what's so bad about a flattened spine anyway? is it just aesthetic? or does it cause some problem in stropping/honing/bevel setting? and what is a "worked out bevel"? thanks.

IMO, the spine, probably flattened from too much pressure, changes the geometry of the razor leading to a wider bevel. Not that you still can't hone 'em and shave but not ideal. Next time you see one with a significant frown note that it will probably have corresponding spine flattening.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
