    Smile schumate antiseptic barber-flea market

So i was in a flea market and found this little sucker. it says SCHUMATE ANTISEPTIC BARBER on the tang and looks to me to be full hollow and just about 4\8 i think but this being my first straight razor purchase that may be a little off

If you look at the third picture from that angle it seems to be a wave pattern in the blade is that ok? if you look at your blades like that do you find something simmilar?does that mean its not useable?from other angles and tests it seems straight.

So please tell me what ever information you have on this and if it is any good and worth the 14$~ i payd for it which i dont think its all that much for it anyways (if it can be brought back that is)

AND how do i do it??? get sand paper and get at it? do i need to remove scales? if so how to do that and put them back together please spare no detail because i am not netting anyone else do anything for me on this one

Im so hyped about my first straight even if it may never shave again

Thanks all for taking the time to read this.

    Best regards.

    Iulian

you can bring it back but it will take a lot hand work.
    start with
220,320.400.600.800.1000.1500.2000 sand paper. then move mass
.you will need to take blade out to do better job.
you will spend so much time at the end that blade will cost you more then you imagine.

i went out today and bought some sand paper in 240 320 400 and 600 grits coz thats the max i could find and got at it...

this is the result , i didnt work it realy good because i wanted to see what it could look like with minimum of effort

maybe i will try the progression tomorow again and maybe i will remove some more of the spots.

do you think those spots are hard to remove? could they be real deep in the blade?

if i sharpen it now would it be safe shaving with it like this?

thanks alot for the advice im just a newb and this is the first time i do something like this and as a first i think i did pretty ok

    here are some pics :

this is how you do. i think what you have may is deep one
find 120 grit and stay on it utill you clean up everything. Remember all patina has to be gone.
    Now big questions is this.
Does your blade has enough metal which you could safely?
is that hallow blade i don't think so you would be able to clean them off .
at the moment you can sharpen and try shave if edge is rust free then you should be ok.
if there is rust on the edge then you will end up removing it.

    hi bud,

i understand what you are saying and i think i will try and remove some more rust starting the progression again with 240 ... until 600 and see where i get with it and then we'll see where we if i can manage to remove all rust on the edge.

thanks alot for the advice and im pretty fond of the rusty look of it ... it has a very vintage look to it

    thanks again

    best regards

Could he possible go with a real fine buffing wheel, taking appropriate care with heat, just to do the clean up rather quickly to see if the steel can take it and its even worth the time.
