Thanked: 530Pretty much... Like, somewhere down the line I want to get a custom (those R. Williams look absolutely beautiful) but I want to know what size I like most... And since I can't restore -and won't be able to any time soon... No where for supplies, I'm in college- And all the factory razors nowadays are 5/8 or 6/8 (the vast majority, at least) I want to try a 7/8 and an 8/8 to find my favorite weight and learn what to start looking for... Something tells me I'll like 7/8 most, but it could very well be 8/8, or stay with a 6/8... I just want the experience.

So you want to borrow someones tools eh? You know how that goes.
Actually, since you have expressed an interest in trying a large razor I would just give it some time and see if someone makes an offer to you rather than start asking specific people. Just my 2cents.No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 530Yea... I'm just gonna sit on my hands for a while... It's not like I'll be able to have a custom made ANY time soon, and I can't do my own restorations -no supplis, no work area- so, I'm perfectly happy with my 5/8 now and then, and my two 6/8ths most of the time... It's just an idle thought... and I figured nothing would come of it if I didn't at least ask...
So I asked, and now I wait.

if it were me i'd try goose with three olives, i think that has the best chance on him? for don it's gotta be scotch.
in any case consider how uncommon these razors are and then how much money they go for and the chance of finding a practicing barber who uses one of them are pretty slim. best bet is to just find the barbers near you who use straight razors and call to ask if they happened to have a big razor and whether they can shave you with it, or let you shave yourself.
personally i've been going the buy it route for almost any razor i fancied. just one (tiptle) i borrowed from a friend first.
actually there were 4 more that i tried at the ny meeting last fall - joed and lynn/don were generous to let me give them a spin.

Thanked: 530As soon as I'm 21, Gugi, I owe Lynn at least 3 bottles of Grey Goose, I know that much
However, at 18, I have no way to aptly express thanks just yet.
I'll wait, and I'll find some way to test them... Maybe I'll get lucky, find a beefy blade at an antique mall, and send it out for repairs... At least I know how, when I see it in person, to tell if a blade is salvageable or not...

How old you gotta be to buy some see-gars?
I'm pretty sure Lynn likes those, based on his avatar...

Thanked: 530Also, I know that 7/8 and 8/8 aren't /that/ uncommon in vintage razors... at least, I've seen both... How often do 9/8 razors show up outside of customs?

I don't see many over 8/8. I own one, and she's maybe 17/16 - it's very close. Like mainaman said, they get very expensive. More than I'd pay.
Oh, by the way, imo, once you get past half hollow, there is no difference in feel - it's all stiff. After that, it's all about weight.Last edited by holli4pirating; 02-24-2010 at 02:11 AM.
