    Because the slight extension of the point and the fact that it is relatively squared off allows you to reach in to nooks and crannies that you couldn't do with a round point. At least not easily. IMO you can do close work more accurately with a point with a slight or more pronounced extension. Here are two examples to illustrate my point (no pun intended )
