After watching Chimensch's 30th Anniversary Shaving Video [a couple of weeks ago], I tried wiping my blade on a thick sponge. I still risked banging my spike point on the sink basin. What I do now is I keep a damp towel on my sink to periodically wipe the lather off the blade the same way you'd dry the blade on a dry towel after your shave.

Go with whatever works for you; those faucet dings s**k!
    Namaste,

You are welcome but it is not my video. Thank Chimensch!

The sponge idea is a keeper.

My sink isn't as wide and flat-bottomed as Chimensch's, and I'd risk hitting the faucet getting the razor to it. So I don't put the wet sponge down in the sink, but up on the vanity top. It's a great idea I was fortunate to see before ever starting to straight shave.

Another thing to watch out for is any metal work on your strop. Even for the simple Rup Razor Filly, there's a metal grommet to avoid.

Thanks for the tips everyone. I think I will box it up today and ship it out to Lynn at SRD to have it honed. Hopefully there is not a huge backlog.
