This is such a hard question. After trying about a hundred different razors last year, I am even more hard pressed to decide.
What I do like is a hollow razor with a belly half way down the thin hollow grind and an extra hard steel.
I have several like this and they all shave equally great. But the hunt does go on.

Hmmmm! Thats tough. So many i think are beautiful. But I just shaved with a razor i bought off the classifieds. $35 Blue Ribbon. Gave me a shave that holds it own with the best and beats some of them too. Might just have even beat my Fili 13. But C-mon i would like to try.
It's totally unatainable, but this is what I want.
I want NASA to launch a space probe to collect ore from an asteroid. I want that ore to be delivered to Maistro Livi. I would also want that razor to be scaled in fosilised mamoth ivory with somehow, gold flecs in the ivory.

Well it might not be much of a grail, but most razors are for me until I get a job. :D
I haven't gathered much of an opinion of what I like in a razor as far as grind or size, but I eventually want a Heljestrand with translucent horn scales.
I'm a function over form kinda guy so I must confess to already having my holy grail.

The bid ends in an hour, I was thinking maybe I can transfer some money from savings and spring for about $200 bid, because the bid was at $185 this morning, but it's just jumped way too high for me. Oh well, maybe another time.
OMG!!! That razor went for $365. I would be ordering a custom for that amout of money. Ha prob not enough for a custom but still!!

this is my holy grail. has been since I found this site.. its the reason I joined. yeah I know I havent been around long but I just cant imagine a razor I would be more proud to hold and own and nick myself with.
I even have it as my phone back ground.. much to the dismay of swmbo since it replaced "that cute pic of us at the park".

I've pretty much gotten all of my Holy Grail razors, one at the time:)
However, finding a Bill Ellis custom has eluded me, so I guess IT would have to be that.
A Josh Earl or a Joe Chandler would suit me Just fine as well.

I am a simple fellow. I'd like to have a razor with ivory scales.
I'd really like to turn up a big Bartmann with an engraved blade. I've never shaved with a Bartmann, but there's something terrific about the company's logo -- a man with an enormous beard -- etched into a tool designed to remove beards. I've yet to be disappointed by any of the old Solingen razors I've found, so the odds are that the Bartmann would be a pretty solid shaver, too.
It may be dopey to covet a razor because of a logo/engraving, but there you go.
I'd really like a pre 1800 restored straight. I've got an 1825 John Barber but I'd love a nice restored straight from the 1700's.
As of right now, this is my own holy grail razor. The small amount of Scott I have in my blood is boiling over these beautiful scales.
Unfortunately eBayer altima55's razors tend to be a few hundred dollars out of my price range.
Springville, NY Case XX razor, Only made there for like 3 years. Im from Springville, NY so it would mean a lot to me. found one a couple months ago in a antique shop but they wanted $175 which i did not have. but i go to garage sales every week in springville so ill find one some day

No one did this design since the death of Fila.
I recently acquired my Grail, for now. It's my first and only custom, and my first and only Damascus, and I like big razors. This one is a monster (112 G weight, vs. 93 G for a big W&B "Barbers Use" in 8/8ths). But it handles and balances beautifully.
L. R. "Butch" Harner Damascus in 8/8ths, with Redwood lace burl scales. Butch told me the steel is 1018 and pure nickel for the cladding, and 1084 Fine Grain for the core, with FeCl etch to contrast the layers.

Mines is a number of razors lol, I have a heft 7/6 W&B with horn scales and I want 6 more, because I think they would make an awesome 7 day set, the idea is to make up 7, resore them all and have the spines stamped then I'll have a lovely set .

Butch outdid himself again on that one...simply gorgeous.
I don't know enough about the various makes and vintages to "know" which razor is my grail... but my gut tells me a Spanish point wedge blade of an overall shape like the razor in the logo on the top left of the SRP pages would be about perfect.
Dark horn scales... perhaps a wood or vintage ivory.... or ebonite... or celluoid. No plastic though.
Anyone have suggestions as to makers I should keep an eye out for? Just landed a Wade and Butcher Wedge with is about 93% of what I want for under 20usd of the 'bay... it'll hold me till I find better.:bow It's point is just a bit too "blunt" to be the perfect Spanish point... but it is a nice wedge in ebonite scales. Need to get it off to be honed as my skills aren't up to snuff yet.
Oh yah... a worked spine with a good smile on the blade and "hump" on the tang would be major points toward "grail" status.
I don't know who made the razor I lust after, but I'll sure know it when I see it. Till then, my Torrey and WB blades will suffice.
I recently saw for the first time a Zowada which I think was made for another shaving forum, and I knew then I had found my (probably unobtainable) Grail....
I always keep my eyes open for a nice C-Mon vintage 6/8 or more.
While I can't speak about most of the razors mentioned in this thread from first hand experience I can here. I really do enjoy my shaves with the 6/8's Cadillac and 8/8's Blackie. They are not easy to find but well worth the wait.Quote:

Or an Isaac Ellis & Sons since that's my last name...even though my family came across from England about 100 years before they made silverware and knives. Any with the surname Elias would also bring a glint to my eye as that's the Welsh rendering of Elisha and likely where the name Ellis came from. The surname King is also a family name, but I've never ran across razors made by any King...and he came over in 1769 so If I ever did find one made by and ancestor it would be well out of my price range.
Mine is finally becoming a reality. But I won't ruin the surprise until it is actually in my hands.
I have the razors I want, the grail is to get them all cleaned and honed to their potential and get BBS results with all of them.
I got quite a few razors so that each razor wouldn't need an inordinate amount of attention once I got it fixed up.
