Early retirement for my DD?
Back in college, when Reagan was still president, I mentiioned to my roomate that it would be cool to try shaving with a straight razor. For my 21st birthday, he gave me a new, never honed shiney razor with pearl handles and some ducks on it with gold plating. Very nice I said. Tried it once, then put it in a drawer for 20 years.
The razor was a Double Duck Goldedge, NOS, and knowing him, he probably paid $20 for it. had he known what it would turn out to be, he probably would have kept it. This was my first razor and I wisely entrusted it to Ken Rup when I started getting serious about shaving with it. he put a beutiful edge on it and straightened out the scales so it closed properly. Since then, I have added a couple of W&Bs, a nice Torrey, a Boker and a few others to the stable (yes, I have SAD....and I'm okay with that).
I have been looking for another DD to replace this one, so I don't get it all dirty, but I'm just too cheap. The question is, do i retire it early, and save it for special occasions, or use it and love it?

Very nice
Not often you notice the drawer inhabitants have a value beyond the sentimental

Very nice! I love DD's, I think they are great looking razors.
Personally, I'd use it and love it! Thats what it was made for, and whilst it would look great on a shelf you dont get the additional enjoyment of holding it in your hand and feeling the edge on your skin. Yep, use it and love it!

If you had gotten it from some college kid - would you use it? You were that kid.
If you had gotten it from some dad - would you use it? You are that father.
If you had gotten it from some grandfather - would you use it? Someday you'll be that grandfather.
If you had sent it to me - would I use it? Ooops, sorry, that slipped out.
Use it, love it, hug it, pet it, show it off, hide it from those who would disparage it, but above all, use it.

Unless you obtain something for an investment (in which case you want to lock it away since every scratch and mark will devalue it) I think things are meant to be used. If I were you I would use it as a sunday razor that way it will get use but still stay pristine.

Use it! Call it a very special occasion razor, but it was meant to shave with and will do so with style and excellence.

Thanked: 43I'm just a SR noob, but my .02 is to use it; she'd be beautiful sitting on a shelf, but so much prettier in use.
Gorgeous razor.

I have some Case tested xx pocket knives that are mint and for which I am the custodian. Eventually when I shuffle off this mortal coil some other fellow will enjoy using what I have been keeping pristine for him. So with razors I use them while I'm here..... and I haven't got as long ahead of me as is behind me ..... so all the more reason to use it.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I think that the bottom line is to use that razor. Even if you used it every day and honed it in a responsible manner, it will outlive you, your children as well as your grandchildren. I don't think there's much damage to be done to the razor by using it. Keep it cleaned and oiled during it's life and enjoy it forever.
