It's probably good practice but if you're using the razor often, I don't know that you need to coat the blade every time unless you keep it in an area with lots of moisture.
I have two razors that I only use on special occasions and those are the only two I keep oiled, since it could be months between shaves. If you use the razor at least once a week then I think you should be okay with just wiping it off, letting it dry (especially between the scales and in the pivot area), and then storing it.

I prefer white petrolatum (vaseline) due to its availability and thickness. I put vaseline on my blades after every use. I think vaseline is especially useful, and maybe better than other less viscous oils, when blades are stored for any period of time between shaves.
As an aside, whenever the use of vaseline is mentioned, someone will tell you it contains water. It doesn't.

I only use oil on razors I don't use for quite some time. I use Ballistol oil that I got when I purchased a Le Grelot. It's good oil, but I think other oils will suffice too.
