Thread: Union Cutlery - Georgia?

I recently acquired a Union Cutlery off of ebay that is stamped Union City, Ga on the tang. What, if any, relationship does this Georgia razor have to the New York company that eventually called itself Ka-bar? Are the Georgia blades as well thought of as the NY blades, which I understand to be highly regarded? Are the Georgia blades US or German in origin?

Mine is the standard vintage 5/8 square point, but I don't think it has ever been honed much (if at all - spine doesn't look like it has been touched), and I was wondering if this was just another ebay clunker or possibly something nicer.

I'm almost positive the Union Cutlery Co razors from Olean NY are American steel. They sure feel like American Steel to me - I love American steel and these are no exception. I didn't know there was a Union Cutlery in Georgia. Do you have photos of the tang stamps? I'd be curious to see.

Ah, Union Cutlery Co. vs Union Razor-Cutlery Co. I'd say they are probably not related, but I could be wrong.

I don't see many 6/8 square point U.S. razors around my parts.

BTW, no markings on the back of the tang. My thoughts are this is a U.S. made razor from U.S. steel.

Funny though, the font of the stamping looks very similar to a Cattaraugus Green Lizard I have that's featured under one of the sets of a Flickr album I've been working on of my favorite razors (see my signature).

My apologies, Union Razor Cutlery it is. Mine has the same tang stamps as those posted, down to the imperfect striking of "Union City" like above. But mine is not as nice as that one.

I too have found that US razors tend to be 11/16 or smaller with razors over 6/8 being pretty uncommon. Really is a pity, IMO, because I like 6/8 and larger full hollows from stiff steel and American steel is pretty stiff.

It happens to be these very attributes that make me like the Friodurs so much.

Don't know if it's helpful, but there are also razors stamped "Dixie MFG. Co." from Union City, GA.

Odd... I found the EXACT same razor with the exact same case today for 9.50$... However, yours is in better condition than mine... Interesting

I thought I remembered reading somewhere that it was the same company, and it moved at one point. I have one of each, One says Union Razor Cutlery Co., Union City Ga, the other is branded "Gold Coin" on the front, and says Union Cutlery Co., Olean, NY. The Gold coin is big, 11/16". The Union Razor Cutlerly Co. is the more typicla 5/8" Both are excellent. The Gold Coin looks older.
