In terms of shave quality I have heard that carbon steel is the best, from several members and reputable razor smiths, here at SRP and in private discussions.

I agree the damascus, takeda etc is beautiful to look at, but serves aesthetic appeal soley and nothing more. I have however, heard than San Mai damasus is a different story, but know very little about it other than it has an SG1 core which I can not verify the meaning.
