Consider checking out SRD...Straight Razor Designs...they have strop/razor sets...I purchased a 3" Red Latigo with linen and a Dovo Best Quality Blond (plastic scales though) for right at $160...honing is out of my league right now to be honest. Have you decided to bo with a bowl and brush for your lather?...what kind of soap?...these too can get pricey. I use a Van Der Hagen brush/bowl and VDH soap as well. I'd rather spen money on a good blade and get the technique down first before sinking serious coinage into the brush/bowl/soap.

Hey, i can understand not wanting to spend more money on creams/soaps etc. but unless your shaving only stubble i don't recommend the water only. If you have naturally oily skin before you shave only a slight irritation may result but if your shaving more than twice a week and/or with a beard it's just not comfortable! plus the soaps smell awesome feel even better and are just plain good...it like yin and yang man

I too would discourage that approach...water only sets you up for alot of unnecessary misery...it might come off as not giving the entire process (the soap is part of the beard prep process) a fair shake when the entire process wasn't properly evaluated. I hope that whatever you decide works out to your satisfaction. I'm having a blast with my Dovo Best and I really can't imagine fully enjoying it without the lathering up and letting the soap do it's job. If you've ever done the "water only" approach with the plastic then you'll know where I am coming from. Good luck with whatever choice you make. Rich.

Thanked: 0thanks for looking out for me guys. I got a few reasons why i only want to use water, one being that ive always used just water and it seems like my skin has gotten used to it. Its not that i dont want to spend money on the extra accesories, I just dont want to rely on the stuff. I guess you can say I wanna more natural way of shaving. I use fresh spring water when I shave instead of tap because of all the crap in the public water system.

no problemo...from what I've experienced to date, the folks in this forum are a really great bunch...really helpful and eager to share what they know so you can get to great shaves as quickly and as easily as possible...one question though, have you done your "water only" shaving with your regular razor?...if so, any big issues?...that might go a long way towards helping you determine your course...

Thanked: 0@juko: thanks juko i'll check it out
@certifiedbodyman: yup I only use water with this crappy regular plastic razor, and I dont have any irritation. Its time to upgrade to something classier though, and I love the idea of learning how to use an old fashioned single blade razor to get the job done.
