Yes, I must admit that I've been a little dismissive of the Sheffields but they've now over taken the Germans and are not far behind the French.

Isn't there 1 or 2 enterprising young Englishmen that would love the opportunity to resurrect Sheffield razors on an artisan type basis?

Personally, I would love it if we could expand the art of straight razor shaving so much that it could bring back at least 1 Sheffield company. I refuse to believe that this has gone the way of the buggy whip for them!

I have wondered about this as well. It seems to me that the custom makers are in the U.S., Perhaps because that is where I live. I would think there would be some new makers starting up in the U.K. as well.

All this praise of Sheffield makes me wonder what I've been doing wrong... is there a Sheffield whisperer in the house?

There was some talk here at SRP about a chappie in the UK who was looking into making straight razors. IIRC his name was Farrad (sp?), and it turns out that he was referring to making a trial batch Japanese type razors (Iwasaki's). I don't know what the outcome was

Between the ages of 9 & 11, I lived in South Yorkshire (in Finningley), which was in the coal/steel area of Doncaster & Sheffield. I went up there a few years ago on a nostalgia trip, and it is all gone - the mines, the steel works, the lot; what a shame

Mind you, a job as a miner down the Pits was grim; it was bad enough going down the Pits on a school trip, let alone working down there for years !

I have always had the greatest respect for miners since then.

You know, I think a lot about the craftsmen that made these vintage razors, but rarely do I think of the men that generated the raw materials that allowed the craftsmen to flourish.

You pointed out the miners, who must have had unbelievable guts to go down in the mines in those days, but also the iron ore miners and steel mill workers. Those are some real unsung heroes in the vintage razor production as well.

Some others are the inventors and manufactures of Bakelite and celluloid and the harvesters of horn.

I use Sheffields almost exclusively now, I have one more Solingen to get rid of (Boker 451B Long Tail) and its a wrap for German blades for me. I will keep my Dovo Special forever because it was gifted to me by my wife.
