Thread: My First "Over priced Junck Store" Find

The price wasn't really that bad. I did try to haggle on it though.
It was tricky keeping a strait face when i took it out the 1/3 of a box that was covering it.
There are a couple DE's I might bite on next time I am out that way.
Gillette Super Speed and Adjustable, couple Gems as well in pretty good shape.

This weekend is a bit busy (Schutzhund trial) so I am going to coat them in Mineral Oil and next week look into sending them out.

That is one NICE Pipe I'd have to jump on it as well, looks like it will clean up very nicely indeed

I agree that they're both nice razors. I disagree that the scales on the Wostenholm are tortoise and instead believe them to be mottled horn.

That pipe is awesome. As for the first razor, "every dog has his day" lol. Don't fret. Everyone takes a few losses in their razor quest. Get some use out of what you paid for by taking advantage of restoring that frown. The experience you gain will more than compensate.

Nice Wostenholm! Unusual to see horn scales of that era without bugbites and cracks. Mine have been excellent shavers. The Red Dog looks like it will be a good shaver too. Can't find any information on it. Your finds have just helped me decide that it is time to visit my two favorite antique malls in Tucson this weekend!

Unfortunately I think the scales on the Pipe have seen their day.
I think it is what one calls cell rot, there are some bits missing on the inside and they are a little rough around the edges.
If they are salvageable that would be nice but I think I would rather have it rescaled with a 3 pin as these have left a little rash on the front where the current scales make contact.

I need to send out some PM's and get these shipped out I am getting anxious to shave with them.

No, cell rot refers to celluloid. I think you see cell rot more on the rust patterns on the blade than you see it on the scales.

I don't think the scales are tortoise, unless the black spots on tortoise are only surface spots. I sanded mine just to see what they would look like and they looked like translucent horn.

the Scales are translucent but it doesn't show up well in the photos with out back lighting. The dark spots appear the be on the surface or very shallow.
