Anything that is sold as a straight razor that really isn't capable of holing an edge to shave with. The cheap eBay damascus blades come to mind.

Thanked: 13249This is one of those discussions that have been had over and over about Wapi's...
About 60 % hold and edge just fine, the other 40% will either not hold the edge at all or the heel will literally fall apart into this swiss cheese mess at around 3-4 honnigs...
If you have a good one keep it and be happy, if you got a bad one then you have this "wapi's are disappointing attitude"
It basically was the luck of the draw...
Honestly during the Wapi craze, I had enough problems with them, that much like DA's and GD's I stopped accepting them in for work to be done...
In fact I remember back during that frenzy, that many people would not buy the unstamped ones, then as they ran low people were buying any that they could ...Last edited by gssixgun; 12-28-2010 at 02:35 PM.

Fair play if yours weren't all that, but Ive had 3 from the Invisible Edge that were all super shavers free from any issues.
I dont believe they are comparable to DAs and GDs, the latter which I have held in hand. The Wapis I have seen are well made, and well ground, unlike the GDs which are the work of amateurs with uneven grinding, thin spines etc of which the odds may allow one or two per X amount to take an edge and hold for a significant amount of time.
Besides, back to the OP. I dont think the Wapi is the most overrated razor. From my understanding it is Fillies which are overrated, but this is on a price basis due to the fact that people pay on ebay the best part of half a grand for them.

Thanked: 13249Whoops, I was just coming back to re-word that I realized somebody would take that to mean the I was comparing those brands,,, I honestly was not, the Wapi's are far superior in all aspects, other than some have softer/bad steel and perhaps that was a tempering/hardening problem...
What I was saying is that I didn't feel right charging people for custom scales etc: on razors that were not up to the task on many of them... So I stopped taking orders...
Honing any of them for hire was also problematic, because you would never know when you were going to find the heel problem... after doing a few at no charge, because of it.. I gave up on it, because beside my fee to hone there is the shipping costs also, and I just didn't feel right about that being a crap shoot...
Sorry I never meant to group the good Wapi's, in with the DA's and the GD's that is a whole other set of problems but people should by now know of them before they buy...
