Default In Praise of the Dovo Special

    Gentlemen,

After yet another stellar shave today with my Dovo 6/8 Special, which was the first straight I owned and what I learned on, I got to thinking that I should write something in praise of it - but not a product review.

I kind of cringe when I hear people talking about it as a "beginner's razor". If it is that at all, it is because of its price. The razor is very aesthetically pleasing, with its gold wash emblem and classy tortoise scales. And this razor has always honed easily for me, delivered a close and comfortable shave, and in spite of being full hollow ground, it is not as tricky to shave with as some of my fully hollows that are almost paper thin. The balance of the Special is quite nice as well.

I would put forth that if all I had was one pair of these, I would be quite happy.

So here is my salute to what I believe is an unsung hero in the vast pool of straights.

Glad to hear that you like it. I'm even more happy to hear you find it easy to hone and it shaves well.
I just had my first ever SR shave with a Dovo "Prima Klang" 5/8. I'm looking forward to many more shaves and someday looking back on it as fondly as you do your razor.

My first straight shave that had me saying "Yeah, that's why I got into this" was with one of these razors. They're not just for beginners, they are a solid, economical, good looking razor for anyone. I have a good many razors, and every time this one comes up in the rotation, I smile.

Agreed! I have a 5/8 and it was my first straight and is still one of my go to razors

Indeed, the Dovo is a great razor. The "Special" is a real keeper. As it was explained to me, when I was beginning my foray into straight razor shaving, the different prices of razors within a particular brand is not because of a difference in the quality of the blade, but the fanciness of the scales; and the scales of the "Special," as you note are very pleasing to the eye on a relatively low priced razor. They look like you would expect the scales on a a straight razor to look.

My first two Dovos were a "Black Star" and a "Prima Klang." I learned how to shave with a straight razor with my "Black Star" so it holds a special place in my heart. That was my "beginner's" razor.

I haven't used either of them a lot recently, but that's not because they didn't deliver great shaves. It's because I got sidetracked with a host of other razors.

I'll have to rustle them up and begin shaving with them again.

Love My 5/8 special. I really thinks it's the best out of all the Dovos and I'm even considering getting a second one.I have two Dovo's. a Best Quality and a Special. It really is a nice old friend to shave with. +1 on what everyone else has said on the matter.

and perhaps a gold inlay that says "pops"? in the same dovo script ofcourse..

Max does a similar scale pattern/material I believe. No idea on the inlay. Maybe remove one from a set of Dovo scales.
