    Default My Hoffritz

    Hello,

I have this Hoffritz I bought a long time ago that got put away by a careless a-hole. Oh, I bought this new like 18 years ago or so.

Anyway, when I dug it out I found out it had rusted some, so I cleaned the rust off and this is what it looks like.

I would love to have it cleaned up nice and honed it, but I'm not sure if it's the right thing to do.

    Any advise?

That should be pretty easy to clean up. From the looks of it, you'll lose nearly an eighth to get it honed to shave ready. It should still be a nice shaver when you're done with it.

If the scales are celluloid and they start to decompose they an cause that kind of damage on the blade. Since you cleaned the rust off it's hard to tell. Just keep a close eye on it for any further damage that just appears.

I actually thought it was my carelessness by putting it away not dry, supported by the fact that the case is plastic, so it'd keep the moisture around. The damage seems to follow the line of the scale on the blade, although I thought the water may have ran there after closing.

The scales look like black plastic, and this is a modern manufacture razor - as I said, I bought it brand new at a mall less than 20 years ago. I didn't think they used celluloid anymore.

I can't see anything wrong with the scales; they aren't warped nor deformed. They also seem to have integrity, meaning they don't seem soft nor are missing material anywhere.

Is there anything I should be looking for regarding cell rot on them?

BTW, the rust seemed fluffy, like snow, but it wasn't soft stuff you could just wipe away. It took some work to remove.

that rusted through steel looks nasty. it certainly would take some work to attempt making it shave again, hopefully it can be saved. it'll never shave the way the manufacturer intended it though - you're looking at loosing almost 1/8" of the width.

    Default Thank you!

    Glen,

They look terrific! I can't wait to get them back... I feel like a little kid the day before his birthday.

Again, many thanks for doing these for me.

    Warmest regards,

    Marcos
