Thread: Advice for blade care?

I cleaned out a liquid hand wash dispenser and refilled it with rice bran oil to use on my razors.
I find it dispenses just enough, if you are gentle.
Any comments on using rice bran oil?

Thanked: 46Over the years I have tried many different oils, even ATF for long term storage, but have never tried rice bran oil. In fact ,I never heard of it. Where do you get it,and how does it compare to mineral oil in thickness? Best, wildhog

It's actually a cooking oil, freely available in supermarkets here in Oz, and is a bit thinner than mineral oil.
At a guess it would be equivalent to around 30 weight, maybe.
I have seen cautions about using olive oil as it gets a bit gunky.
I thought I would see how the the rice bran oil behaved as it is in the pantry next to the olive oil.
It seems to be doing OK ATM.
Cheers,
Geoff

Thanked: 522Maybe you should try TUF-GLIDE on a soft cloth to wipe your blades after you wash and dry them thoroughly. This is a liquid used by the Navy Seals to prevent corrosion on their knives, guns and other vital equipment. Before I put a razor away for longterm storage, I wipe it with Tuf-Glide and then apply Camelia oil. It works for me.

Thanked: 12I had intended to start a thread about this, but I was experimenting on a cheaper razor to see what would remove the black stains from the blade, I had tried a couple different metal polishes, a Miracle Cloth and so on. I saw a bottle of GS27 scratch remover on the shelf. I had purchased this to remove swirl marks and small scratches from car finishes. I thought I would try it for the heck of it. I soon realized it removed the black stains better than anything I had used before. I used it with Qtips and rags and later with a Dremel. It worked great and did not scratch the blade,or remove gold wash. I am not sure if this product is still available, but I know there probably are similar products on the market. This has really worked well for me. Also, remember to wide all surfaces dry with a soft cloth after shaving.
