Thanked: 6Advice for blade care?
Can anyone give me an idea of what to do about the subtle staining on my razor blade. I put oil (either Rem oil or mineral) on my carbon blade faithfully after each use, but I'm seeing the slow growth of dark stains or streaking on it as time goes by. Is there any kind of regular maintenance I can do to keep the blade looking new without dismantling it or dulling the edge to the point where it must be re-honed? Should I just allow it to age gracefully and not worry about its' appearance? I bought the razor from Bob Keyes in like-new condition and was hoping to keep it that way. Any help and advice will be humbly appreciated, thanks.

Break Free gun oil is the best stuff I have ever used for the long haul. Not all gun oils are break free so make sure you get the good stuff. Cheaper ones will get gummy and stain.

after every shave and before I oil them I do 10 laps on clean hard pressed felt and that removes the stuble/soap gunk you are talking about. then after the oil they stay stain free.

Mineral oil will pool some time after application.
I heat some beeswax and mix it with my mineral oil. Eliminates the pooling.

Be sure to clean your fingerprints off the metal before oiling.

Has anyone tried lanolin? I've heard it's often used for rustproofing.

If you're using a quality product you should not be getting any rust stains. If you are the product isn't working or it isn't being applied correctly. I use sterol and haven't had any rust issues. I do still get mineral stains and a typical protecting material won't do anything for that unless it's like a wax. Personally, I don't worry about it and every now and then I use some metal polish to remove them.

Thanked: 46About Break Free, The good stuff has a teflon base and will absolutely stop any pin wear that might take place over time. However, just for me, I would make sure to remove all trace from the blade before stropping as over the life span of a strop one could get enough teflon soaked in to effect performance. Best, wildhog
