Thread: First Razor

looking to buy my first razor I have a guy locally that will hone i am looking at a dorko 5/8 or a henckle Friodur 50 1/2 any suggestions on price and if I am jumping in over my head.

Just ask honest questions and they will answer. the rest is up to you! If you pay attention, you can save big money and enjoy! JMHO!

I love the shave off a Dorko....so that's where I'd go.
I also love the shave off my Friodur....hmmmm, can you buy both?

Don't forget a nice strop. It will be a fundamental piece of equipment in your shaving arsenal.

"Valuation" is a prohibited activity on this forum. Even if it weren't, it would be tough to assign a value without good photos.

I have an old Friodur which shaves nicely. It's in really good shape, and I think it's not very old -- maybe 1950 or later. They have a good reputation. Henckels has been around for a long time, and knows how to temper and grind steel.

My opinion on the price of "first razors":

. . . You can buy a new Dovo "Best Quality" from SRD for around $80, honed.

. . . You can buy a Whipped Dog razor for $30 - $40 (honed)

. . . the Classifieds here (which have razors usually in better condition than Whipped Dog's) usually start at around $40.

Any of those will shave very well, for a long, long time. Those prices are reasonable benchmarks for the value of anything else.

might i ask if the local gentleman is a razor guy? many knife sharpeners CLAIM that they can hone a razor, many even claim that they shave with a straight, but most seem to be able to turn away new shavers with their less than acceptable edges.
i don't want to offend, but it would be sad to lose another shaver to this common malady.

Gerrit just said a mouthful there. You can't hone a razor with the Lansky System. Get it honed through the SRP Classifieds for best results.

A local barber but i found out from talking to a few people its not a good idea so i figure I can either send it out or a bunch of people mentioned there are honing services in NYC where I live i just need to find them.
