Need help to ID
NEED HELP! So i got this razor at an antique shop for $10 which i thought was a good deal. It is rough but i have seen worse! Problem is i don't know if it is worth restoring.. the blade looks like it has a HUGE chip in it..or it could just be the shape? and i have never heard of the brand "720 Step" or "Trade Mark Step" it says its made in Hamburg, Germany if anybody thinks they know about this straight razor please let me know! thanks!

That's a chip. Some people shave with them after a little reshaping, but I wouldn't bother with a full restore (of course that's entirely personal opinion).

Hello, vvi714:
I must agree with my friend deighaingeal: that is a chip, indeed. A big one, I might add. I, too, believe it is not worth the big restoration, but you will have to be the judge.
By the way, welcome to Straight Razor Place.
Regards,
Obie

I say reshape it and give it a try. All you are out is a little time. And after all, time is reletive.

Thanked: 94I think it is worth giving it a shot on the re-shaping.
The razor doesn't appear to have had stabilisers on the blade so you should be able to reshape that chip into a graceful arc to meet up with the tang without impairing the functionality of the rest of the blade. Kind of like an extra thumb notch. If you get really creative you could make the curve mirror the curve you have on the Spanish point.
You have a beautifully worked spine on that razor, so if you can salvage it you will have a thing of beauty.
You'll probably end with about 4" of usable blade and if it is quality steel then that is enough to shave with.
My best German shaver is a Hamburg made razor so not coming from Solingen doesn't mean there is a lack of quality. I don't think they would have put the effort into the spine work and nice scales if they thought the blade itself was substandard.
