Thanked: 1936You can get a good shave off of a 8K stone, but you will have to use a light (weight of the blade only) touch. Make 5-6 passes (one on each side constitutes a pass) with the razor laying flat on the pre-wetted stone. Strop well and see how it goes. If it doesn't go well, try it a couple more times. Have patience here, honing is all about patience and letting the stone do it's thing. If you don't get it, send it to me (just cover the return postage) and I'll touch it up so you can save up for a barbers hone.

Thanked: 240Last shaved with a 5/8 doubl duck spike point that I honed myself. This was a big deal for me a it is the first razor I honed myself and it gave a superb shave except for thele spike which took it's payment in an 1.5" cut which bleed for 10 min. Tonight will be my boker edelweiss as I haven't touched it in months. If I has you collection I think 90% of the time I reach for on of the TIs as they are both really top notch razors.

Thanked: 46I shave in the evening, and last night I used a Case Red Imp almost wedge spike. Have to be careful as that spike is like a raptors talon. Best, wildhog

Thanked: 1936It may take a few times to get it right, but by taking the minimalist approach you shouldn't hurt a thing. If you have a pasted (chromium oxide or .5 diamond) strop (leather, balsa, etc.) you might use it 20-30x, then plain leather first. If that doesn't work, then take the stone route followed by the pasted strop, then plain leather. If you don't have a pasted strop (I don't recall if you have one or not), then go as planned on the 8K stone.
BTW, which 8K do you have for reference purposes?Southeastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Please don't hesitate to contact me.

Used the vintage 5/8 Boker Edelweiss, love the weight and glide. Had to make a few more passes than normal per side. I had about a week's worth of growth...with thick hair, the razor could only do so much. No burn, and a DFS. I've worked my rotation to be:
5/8 Boker Edelweiss
5/8 Torrey
6/8 Jos. Allen and Sons (Special Hollow)
6/8 Clauss (near Wedge)
I love them all that sometimes my rotation spends a little longer with one blade than the others.
