early Razors?
I was wondering if any of you good folk knew of medieval razors or earlier , I am particularly interested in saxon period ? Razors are not an artefact I have seen preserved in a museum (or at least i have not recognised one on my trips around european museums).
how old is "shaving" ?
I think they would be a great use for bloomery steel.....

Thanked: 23That's something i've wondered about as egyptians shaved face and hair(even the women shaved they're heads) with bronze razors but i need found a reference in the iron age,the romans also shaved and they endured into the steel age so there must be some out there somewhere, one thing i can think of is bronze lasts a lot longer than any steel so maybe rusted away, you've spiked my curiosity now because wigs and shaven faces were around for a lot of centuries especially amongst the upper class, hopefully someone can shed some light on the subject

Thanked: 983I believe razors of that early period were more knife like in construction. Some real smiling edges on them too. I have seen some references somewhere before with photographs and images. Just can't remember where. Sorry.

Questions like this come up from time to time and I'm always fascinated by what I learn in the responses. Search the threads and you'll find a wealth of information. In the meantime, here's a link you might find interesting: Straight razor history
