Thread: How bad did I do?

Ok, so I picked up this razor from ebay and was wondering how bad you think it is. I purchased it mostly for the name, I have a good friend with the last name Morley who works in a family business with his dad so I thought it would be cool to have a razor by Morely & Son to show him.

I only paid $10 plus $3 to ship it so I can't lose much. The razor looks to me like it has a bunch of toe wear but the edge doesn't look destroyed to me. So what do the experts on here think? Is it scrap or can I do something with this thing?

I am neither an expert nor a magician, but I could probably get it to shave with quite a bit of preliminary bevel work. And though not scrap, I'd personally prefer to spend an extra $10 or so and get a razor that does not need quite so much work. The picture is for easy reference

I suppose it can be made to shave, but that's probably going to hurt your head and/or wallet more than just starting over from scratch. Laugh this one off and keep it as a letter opener or something.

Keep searching, there are plenty of Morleys out there for the taking!

Yeah, that's about what I figured. I might play with it and try to learn how to restore or something like that. I really wanted it for the name more than anything. I certainly didn't think I was getting something ready to shave and $13 ain't going to kill me.

I'll be honest, it's not something I would have ever considered buying.

When I started straight shaving I was quite in budget & got many bills to pay, after doin research on the net for a moment I was goin to decide to get a really cheap razor from ebay, but the next day somehow I realize that the razor is actually for my face. not for my hand or leg or whatever.

In the past I've had spent something like $200 $300 for a pair of shoes, for a jeans, stupid stuffs,.. then why should I be so cheap buying a knife for shavin my face.

and I read on wipi SRP I could get a good sharp razor for a good price, then I decided to get a brand new 6/8 Dovo best quality from SRD.
Im glad I had made a right decision, if I had gotten a wrong razor in the first place I might not still stay learning in SRP

I use a Dovo Best Quality 6/8 myself and it's a great razor. In fact it's my first straight razor. Good luck and may many great shaves come your way.

I understand the sentiment, though it really doesn't apply here. I already have a razor to shave with that I purchased from a member here. This ebay razor is something that I want to play with at restoring, so I can learn the ins and outs of taking it apart and redoing things. I'm not cheaping out on something that I'm going to rip my face up with.

Well, not soooo bad as all that..... for all intents and purposes, that blade is shot, even though I love Morleys. The scales are very nice, though, and a popular design used by many manufacturers. If you decide to stick with straights and make them a hobby, those scales should turn out to be useful. If not, you should be able to sell this for the scales and get your money back.

Buying razors on eBay takes some luck, some skill, and some discipline. If I ever develop any of those attributes, I'll let everyone know.
