Well, I did say it was one of many ways they are better, not the only way.... But yes, I suppose I did not answer the question about performance.

In terms of performance, I would say my customs shave as well as any razor of lesser cost. So in terms of performance you are no worse off with a custom than you are with, say, a Filli or a duck or a Puma or a Bengall etc.

So given both custom and non-custom are about equal in terms of performance, and taking into account my previous post, you are obviously overall better off with a custom than not!

yes, I must agree with you Ryan, it really doesn't matter how much a razor cost at the end of the day. I must say my best shaver is one I bought (it's a Holzhaur) for $15 at an antique store. Most importantly, when I finish it's super smooth with zero irritation. I really can't imagine a shave being any better, I mean really, how much better can it be if it so close that I don't have to shave for two days and when I finish shaving, my face feels just great. Though, I've heard the same things said of the Filarmonica...maybe someday - when I can afford it (right)- I'll give it a try.

so ok ... the steel is better today, ok ..... the price is better today, ok .... but today we have the best stones. therefore, an old and a new rasieren.viele forge a razor itself from filing. But they also shave only.

OK, I'll admit I bought a few hones, but how can you get a nicely finished edge without a 30K rock, right? The way I see it, I will have broken even in the year 2048. From then on, I'll be saving money big time if you don't count the Styptic. Man, I love saving money! I am saving money, right?
Ace--You are saving money because you took up straight razor collecting instead of fine shotgun collecting. Very wise of you!

Not quite! I already had a house full of pistols, including some Kimbers. But at least I'll never go back to disposable pistols again.

Collecting, Lordy, I've collected old side-by-sides, I've collected rifles, I went through a time collecting centre-pin fishing reels, I've also owned most of the orvis fly fishing catalog at an earlier time in my life. This hobby, is certainly cheaper than some of my hobbies in the past. Though, nothing compares to my very small (by comparison) collection of x wives - so far numbered uno, that one is a reallllly expensive hobby. As a plus, though, is one fine little 'ol spud I've acquired as a souvenir!

I have Wackers, Rob't Williams, Max Sprechers, Pumas, Revisors, DDs, many expensive blades. That having been said, some while back Sham was selling low priced "WORKMAN" razors which are basically unattractive, utilitarian blades but when properly honed and stropped, no razor shaves any better than the Workman.

If you want to spend megabucks, do it. If you want a good shave, all you need is a good hone job.

What is a Workman - exactly? Is it a new, cheap razor? Or an old one restored?

Workman are older razor made in Germany. I have a few and sold a few. Mine are plain Jane razors that give a really nice shave. The ones I have must have been made for re-branding as the shanks are just lightly etched and some very minor buffing or polishing will remove the etch.
