Thread: Origin of the curved razor toe?

    What prompted this thread ...... I was doing a Google Patent search for Patents of old hollow grinders for straight razors and this patent popped up. I thought it to be unique that someone would try to patent such a old basic idea. But then I considered that the razors would have decarb and need to be ground back.
    So I concluded the decision was probably made to make the decarb grind into a distinct shape for each model/mfg. Thus the origins of the various point styles.....just conjecture.

    Thanks Neil for sharing these insights into razor manufacturing.
    Do you think this process of cutting or grinding the carbonised steel of the tip led to the tendency for very old razors (200+ years) to be generally longer than the ones produced in more recent times?
    Could the barbers notch have come about due to this process?
