Thanked: 0Applying oil to the blade following a shave
Silly question but...what is the best way to apply oil to the edge after shaving when you put away the razor? Normally I would probably apply a few drops and then use a cloth to distribute it but I fear this might damage the edge. You could also cut the cloth or even yourself this way. What do you folks do?

I use a Q-tip to cover the entire blade on both sides with oil.
Apply 1-2 drops of oil on one side of the blade and spread it over that side with the Q-tip.
Repeat for side 2."Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Mark Twain

Thanked: 19I picked up a very small (maybe 3 or 4 inches high) squirt bottle from hobby lobby and filled it with mineral oil. I squirt the blade on each side and rub with an old cloth diaper. Eventually, the diaper gets soaked with oil, and there is no reason to squirt the razor for a while. I do this after every shave as the last step before I put it away.

I simply put a drop of oil on each side and spread it with my finger swiping my finger from the back downward and off the edge of the blade.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I have another question about oiling.
I have 8 razors and I shave once a week using a different razor every week so each razor is used once every two months. I am very careful to make sure each razor is dry dry dry after use and I keep them in a display case. With this kind of a rotation would it be necessary or recommended to oil my razors? Also, is it bad to put oil in the pivot pin area?
Thank you!

I find this whole string interesting. I shave every day with a straight edge and never oil the blade. I have no problem keeping an edge or with residual rust. However, I have to agree with "bmf2001", dry, dry, dry is essential. After shaving I wipe the blade clean with a cloth, blow any moisture off the scales and wipe again, then strop the blade several times to take the moisture off the edge and store it in a dry place. This method has worked for years. I do oil the pin once a month. If you rotate blades every day and won't get back to a particular blade for quite some time, maybe oiling the blade makes sense. I personally think oiling your blade everyday is overkill and unnecessary.

You make a good point. I rotate razors every three-four months or so. I also live in a relatively dry climate. After restoring a razor I like to get to know it. I love my razors too and find no fault in protecting them with oil if your storing them for a long period.
