    Default Benefits of Straight Razor

    Hey Straight Razor Palace !

I was wondering if you lot would be kind enough to list why 1 would choose a straight razor compared to modern methods, personally i'll be purchasing a shavette in the next few months while their is a difference in the design, construction and heritage, if its used properly, a shavette can yield results just as close as the real thing.

I was wondering in a simple bullet point format, if you could list benefits of a Straight Razor in general and over the disposable razors of today which are plaging shaving !

    Thanks

    1) buy one straight razor, learn how to use it and maintain it, and you'll never have to buy another razor, and neither will your first born son.
    2) no ingrown hairs or razor burn
    3) turn a daily chore into something you look forward to each day
    4) the sheer joy of getting a great shave off a blade you sharpened yourself
    5) a sense of quality and ownership with a fine straight razor
    6) for those who are nostalgic about history, a good feeling of owning a piece of it
    7) for craftsmen, a sense of pride in restoring a piece of history and making their own scales for it
    8) no more "feeding into the machine" with vibrating, 10 blade disposable mach 9's for $30 a pop
    9) A hobby which simplifies life and allows you to meditate and pamper yourself like a man
    10) a valuable weapon and/or tool if you're ever stranded on a tropical island with man eating cannibals

    11) The feeling you ARE a Man. You take on yourself your own responsibilities. If you don't shave yourself well, it's your own fault. Are you able to use a real blade or not?
    12) The relax you get using a STR8. It's like yoga for us Westerners, but it takes less time.
    13) The increase in your sensitiveness both when you sharp your razor and when you shave. Every shave teaches you something the previous one didn't.
    14) Your razor doesn't speak all the time like your woman...

This kinda tells it all. I think there is no convincing you.

agreed. personally I feel that shavette's are on par with DE's, which while miles beyond any electric/modern monstrosity, my DE (1958 fatboy) does not compare to one of my Straights...

I do have a dovo shavette and a parker. I shaved with a DE for about 15 years, and yes they are about equal except for the handling. I no longer shave with either now that I have experience with a real straight razor shave.

    Best of luck
    Jeff.

I think all the material benefits, such as economy, have been covered as have most of the ethereal ones, like satisfaction and nostalgia. There is a part of me that enjoys doing something as part of my grooming that quite frankly scares the willies out of a lot of guys. It's a thumb of the nose to modern consumerism and disposable society, as well.
