Thread: Need advice for my next razor

I am in the market for a vintage straight razor. I already have a Dovo best quality which has been just fine however, I want a second for various reasons (comparing edges, trying different qualities, not having to sharpen my sole razor as much, collecting, etc). I would LOVE a Dubl Duck or Wade & Butcher however, I could do without spending the cash.

I found it at my Grandfather's house after he past. I have no idea if he ever used it or if it was used by someone before his time. Whatever the case, the razor has some sentimental value but not that much because for all I know he bought it at a flea market and threw it in a drawer. That doesn't mean I want to butcher it, but it does mean I have no problem having it fixed up and made shave ready.

I want one of the vintage razors that are amazing shavers and for some reason I feel like this razor is just average.

What do you think? Have it fixed up and just try it, or buy what I really want?

Well...

I'd get that one fixed up. You can always look for a DD or WB later, they're not going anywhere. Get that family one back in working condition and give it a shave. Who knows, it may blow your socks off...

....Remember...most of the time it's not the razor....its the operator.

Angle + Pressure + Lather + stropping + scything + prep + post shave + a well honed RAZOR = good shave.

Only one of those variables is constant.

I have about 20 razors, all but one came from EBay. There are some good, reputable sellers there. I have only had one bad razor. Make sure you really pay attention to the pics, description and seller feedback.

I'd argue that no variable is constant, but then I may be considered contentious and I wouldn't want that.

I would just treat myself and buy another Revisor

I own the same Dovo that you do. I also bought an old W&B at the local antique mall for, i think ,about $15. There is one place to start looking. I had mine honed and now i never touch my Dovo.I love the shorter handle on the W&B,also the added weight if the blade seems to be easier to control to me. Good luck on your hunt!
