fromm 72r...?

so I decided that i was SO excited about getting into the whole wetshaving thing that I was going to go buy my straight razor as soon as I could, so I went to some wholesale place with my barber and he got me hooked up for only $50...and that all happened BEFORE i found this site and all the other wealth of information that is the internet. so now i have this brand new fromm, and i need to get it honed properly so i can start using it... but i've heard some mediocre and some bad things about this razor. I asked one particular honemeister and he said he wouldn't hone it, that it wouldn't take an edge and i needed to buy another razor.
any experiences with this razor? can i at least make a decent shaver out of it so i can use it for...a year or so...while i try to find a deal on a new razor? or i suppose i could start saving... but you know how that goes... most of you were in college at some point in time...

That is likely a cheap razor that wont hold an edge even if you do get it to take one

My advice is put it away and visit WWW.whippeddog.com and get the 48 dollar sight unseen special a shave ready razor, strop and pasted balsa for touchups are all included..

I've honed one. It wasn't fun.

It took forever to set a bevel and get a half decent edge. At best, it was still a less than mediocre shave, but it did shave.

I would suggest chalking that one up to experience, and then perusing our Classifieds section for a shave ready straight razor.

ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
that's pretty expensive to chalk up to experience...
i've already got a strop, so i think i may go with the $24 sight unseen razor...

These are not "junk" razors they just take a bit of finesse as Maxi said to hone,, I have done quite a few of them, The problem with them is at the price point they sell for you can get a entry level DOVO or nearly a entry level TI ...

Once they are up and running I don't know how well they last, only one of the guys I have honed them for ever remembered to e-mail me back after 6 months to tell me it was still going,,, so not a huge test sample

Let's put it this way, I wouldn't recommend one, since there are better options out there for the same coin -BUT- since he already bought one might as well get it honed up and shaving...

yeah i didn't realize when i bought it it wouldn't actually be shave ready... tacking on another $20 at least for a honing and i could've just gotten a honed dovo from straightrazordesigns for 80, only ten more than i paid...

ah well. lesson learned. i think i'll get it honed, use it for a while, then get one of the sight unseens...that way i can compare.

Old Fromm razors are great. I suppose it is another example of using an old, quality name to sell new notsomuch items. I wonder about the new CMons, too. I hear the new Revisors are not so good, but the old ones are great. Seems to kill the name when older examples are top-notch. Shame!

How do you know if it is an old FROMM? I've seen the entry DOVOS and if I remember correctly, this FROMM I held and ended up buying, felt more solid than the DOVO. The guy at the store said that he's been working there for 16 years and it was the first he sold! I bought it seen on sight, out of impulse. Paid $70.00, was marked for $85.00. The owner seem happy to sell it. This was in Panamá.

I'm planing on using it for honing practice. Be a little disappointed if the edge don't hold. Double O
