    Default Need a scales recommendation...

So whilst perusing Fleabay the other day, I happened to pick up a George Wustenholm IXL razor for a REALLY good price. The seller claimed it was from 1857 but I am having doubts about that, either way I like the blade and want to have it restored.

So I am going to be shipping it out to Glenn (gssixgun) to restore and make new scales for (The original scales are not savable unfortunately) and he asked me what material I wanted the scales to be, due to the alleged age, I think bone or horn would be appropriate but I just cannot choose between the 2.

So what say ye all, should I go bone or horn?

If the scales are original & you want to keep the theme, use the same material. I'm guessing they are horn ?
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

    mcgyver74,

    I voted for horn.

I have had most of my daily shavers re-scaled in polished rams-horn by Mr Neil Miller; scales of this material are most lovely

    Have fun !

    Best regards

I vote for horn. You could always have a bone wedge that could be nice!

How can I tell if it has bone or horn now?

If you could post a pic that will help. But what color are the original scales? Of the blonde horn I have seen there is usually darker sections of the grain where as bone will have a more uniform white/cream color.

There are so many different kind of really cool looking horn out there. From viewing glen's work...he has most of them.

Wostenhom made a great variety of blades. All sizes, grinds, shapes, and weights, all marked IXL. They have their name on ancient razors thru the 40's I think. It would be imperitive to see the blade before answering. A pic, perhaps? Then, and only then, shalt thee receive thy answer
"Don't be stubborn. You are missing out."
    I rest my case.
