Thanked: 0So a newbie got a new straight razor!
Finally my package of my two straight razors came today! So I thought, well let's try it, since I hadn't had a shave that morning.
The bad news first:
Yes a new razor, one Bergischer Löwe und one Dovo stainless steel are NOT sharp from the factory!
There ya go.
A being a guy, I tried the HHT (hair test thingy), failed, but decided to try it anyway......
Was not that bad, I could tell above my lips it was a bit painfull, more like really uncomfortable. So, what did think? Man this is better than sliced bread, not better than sex, but hey what is anyway, right? I can tell there is a lot to re-learn about the face and moves on it. But the control and the feel during and after is so cool.
What I am trying to say, is that to anyone thinking of doing the jump, grab your wallet, close your eyes and leap into it! You will not regrett it.
Only negative thing is, the money aspect, it ends up being a tad more expensive than you think, by the time you buy all the things you need. But go ahead and buy a nice new one you like, don't buy a used one IMHO. If you do it, do it!
I only tried the stainless Dovo. Since both didn't pass the HHT, I am waiting for my honing stone. I wil
Post on future adventures with my two new gadgets. Many thanks to the people in this forum hor the help and info, past and present.
Ps.
equipent used Dovo 41 stainless, Mühle silver tip badger brush, Golddachs shaving soap lathered in a Mühle porcelain mug with handle (matching olive wood brush and razor). Now all resting in Dovos Z shaped holder, so I can stare at it, till it dries, lol.

Good luck man. I'm a jump-in-the-puddle-with-both-feet kind of guy too. But be careful, honing is harder than it looks.

Thanked: 275If you've been following this forum, you know that there is a repeated warning:
. . . Don't try to learn to shave with a straight razor, and learn to hone, at the same time.
Sending one of those razors for honing might be a good idea.
But if you continue in your folly (as I did, when I started) --
. . . . Good luck !!

I say go at it alone! I did, it can be done.
Start here:
http://straightrazorpalace.com/honin...on-2012-a.html
Watch Gregg's videos, get a Norton 4000/8000 hone $70+, DMT 325 diamond lapping hone $50+, a Strop, and a 20x or 40x magnifying loupe, and you'll be set for life!
Happy shaving Brother!

Make sure you tape up the spine on the B/L you don't want to mess up that pretty razor when you hone it. Also, being that you have two new razors and no honing experience you might want to send them out for initial honing. if you do it yourself and don't see progress quickly or have problems I would stop and send them out.
