I could have sworn that the Straight Razor Guild Association's Honing Grand Chief declared only 4 HHT defined variations. I'm not sure about this razors failure. I'm interested in how well other razors did against these tests. Will there be any remediation? A re-test? Do others follow my own "No razor left behind" policy?

to each his own I guess, if you find it helpful, use it, if you don't, don't.

Thanked: 4942In my opinion, the saddest thing about the HHT and particularly for new guys is that it creates a negative self fulfilling prophesy with a razor that shaves well and the only problem is the need to improve technique. We have seen so much of this over the years with people coming back within a couple weeks proclaiming their razors must have gotten sharper with use..............
Have fun

Sounds like a business op to me. Put the razor away, send me $10 bucks, practice with another razor, and I'll hone yours by magic! Three weeks of practice with another razor, and yours will magically be ready, honed up, and ready to go.
On a more practical note the difference between honing from HHT 1 to HHT 4 is called stropping.

Thanked: 13245Some of us looked at this in a different way...
If the HHT was reliable, then one would think that most every single DE blade would pass without a hitch
They don't...
Therefore we are back to the original problem, HHT must be well calibrated by the person honing to be of any use what so ever..
Which is the only reason Bart's Wiki article is still in the Wiki, although I personally think he went way to far with the 1-5 BS, the theory behind working to calibrate was sound...
If you hone and want to take the time to work it out the HHT it can be as much help as any other honing stage tests ie: TNT TPT AHT but ony the "Shave Test" can tell you how the razor shaves.. You might also want to learn what the "Shave Test" really is, so it can be useful for a beginner too...

I'm bald as a coot. Surprisingly enough, I don't use the HHT. I've nothing against it, but wish new users would just ignore.

Beat me too it, the wiki should probably include a warning to new users that until they are competent in all other aspects of str8 honing, the HHT is pretty useless and not always necessary for a good shave, unless its already there then forget I said anything.
Its just I've had alot of razors honed by honemeisters that use the HHT and they have all been superb and know alot of other competent honers that use it with success. I use it sometimes out of curiosity but mainly I try and cut the very tips off my leg hair.
