    Default AMS of Sheffield Info

    Good day,

I've got a razor of a friends that I'm trying to do some research on but as of yet to no avail.

A 13/16" blade in Ivory scales. Stamped "AMS Trade Mark - Silver Steel" I hope the logo shows through alright in the images.

The only refrence I've come across bearing the same logo is on the taylors1000 ebay site. He shows a picture with the same logo the only difference is this razor is stamped Silver Steel where his is stamped Sheffield.

If you have any thoughts I'd love to get some history on this one.

    Cheers
    Brad

I played with the 3rd image as best as possible at work here to bring out the logo.

AMS is the mark of Silber & Fleming Ltd taken from the initials of Albert Marcius Silber of 56, Woodside, Eastcheap, London EC.

I used to think that the mark was that of Arthur Marsh, a cutler from Sheffield (Eyre Street, 1845-68) but have since found that that was not the case.

Silber & Marsh were silversmiths, promoting a line of fancy goods including cutlery, cruet sets, decanters, glass china, plated goods and other hollow- and flatware. Silber was born in Schleswig-Holsten in 1833 and came to England in 1854 and set up business with partner Noble Hutchison Fleming. Fleming retired in 1876 leaving Silber as sole proprietor of the company:

Alberts death is a sad one - he got news that his brother, who lived in Paris, had got smallpox so he hurried there to see him. On his arrival he learned that his brother was dead and buried. On the way home he displayed the symptoms of the disease and was dead within a week. People think that he caught it while looking through his late brothers apartment. He was 55 years old.

Below is the interior of one of the departments in their shop:

I doubt that Silber & Fleming manufactured the razors - they were probably made by known razor-makers of the time and stamped with their AMS trademark and place of origin - Sheffield.

    Regards,
    Neil

    Neil,

That's outstanding. The fact that you have more than just a date but a back story to the company is incredible. Thank you for the info I really appreciate it, I may have to buy it from my friend now instead of suggest selling it and have it restored lol.
